Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine a person’s digestive tract. Using an endoscope, a flexible tube with a light and camera attached, your doctor can view pictures of your digestive tract on a color TV monitor.
During an upper endoscopy, an endoscope is easily passed through the mouth and throat and into the esophagus, allowing the doctor to view the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine.
Similarly, endoscopes can be passed into the large intestine (colon) through the rectum to examine this area of the intestine. This procedure is called sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, depending on how far up the colon is examined.
A special form of endoscopy called endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, allows pictures of the pancreas, gallbladder, and related structures to be taken. ERCP is also used for stent placement and biopsies.
Endoscopic ultrasound or EUS combines upper endoscopy and ultrasound examination to obtain images and information about various parts of the digestive tract.

MBBS and M D (Internal Medicine)
Dr. Deepak Kumar Agarwal underwent his MBBS and M D (Internal Medicine) from prestigious King George College, Lucknow, U.P. He was awarded Gold Medal for his outstanding performance as an MD student (best Student, best resident, and best researcher). He joined Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute, Lucknow, U.P, to complete his DM (Gastroenterology), and subsequently continued his academic carrier at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, by undergoing advanced training programs and acquiring newer endoscopic skills.
At SGPGIMS, he pursued his academic interest in the hepato-biliary-pancreatic area and developed it as a subspecialty. Apart from starting a dedicated clinic, all interventional procedures, including Diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP, were also evolved. For the first time in India (1990) – a) Endoscopic Ultra Sonography assessment of hepato-biliary-pancreatic areas (EUS), b) Biliary and pancreatic Lithotripsy and Diagnostic tools for predicting Gallstone composition in vivo were introduced at SGPIMS. He was instrumental in developing all these procedures. His clinical research work resulted in around 50 publications, the majority of them in International reputed journals with high impact factors. He took the department to new heights at the national and international levels. During his tenure, he bagged almost all awards at national and state-level conferences in the hepato-biliary-pancreatic area.
For his academic contribution, he was elected as President of the U.P State Chapter of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and delivered the presidential oration “Past, Present and Future of Gastroenterology in Uttar Pradesh.” He, for the first time, brought the concept of sub-specialty in Gastroenterology. His work on Chronic Liver Disease, particularly Alcohol-induced, has encouraged newer treatment options for this very common problem. To serve the people of his state of Uttar Pradesh, he started the first Gastroenterology center in the state in 2006, providing all the facilities, both basic and advanced (Fibroscan, Endoscopic Ultrasound, Endoscopy & ERCP, Capsule Endoscopy, etc.) under one roof, thus helping patients suffering from various gastrointestinal & hepatobiliary disorders. Over 25 years of practice, he has treated half a million patients and trained many budding gastroenterologists. GASTROCARE MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION [CHARITABLE SOCIETY] started nine years back; under his able guidance, he has organized free medical health camps in Lucknow & adjoining rural areas. Regular CME programs were conducted by eminent expert national faculty, being attended by more than 600 delegates every year from all over UP and adjoining states. These Continuous Medical Education (CME) programs highlight the propagation of knowledge to the younger gastroenterologist, physicians, and surgeons from all over Uttar Pradesh. These training programs have not only benefited doctors but also have helped in better treatment of patients from both urban and rural areas. Uttar Pradesh government keeping his these contributions in the field of medicine, awarded him with the highest civilian honor of the state – the Yash Bharti Award 2016. For his continuous contribution towards the advancement of medical science (Gastro medicine), he was recently awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, 2017.
