Cancer Treatment Modalities in Medical Oncology

Chemotherapy utilizes powerful medications to destroy rapidly dividing cancer cells. It can be administered orally, intravenously, or topically, and the drugs travel throughout the body to target cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be used as the primary treatment or in combination with other therapies, such as surgery or radiation.

Targeted therapy is a type of cancer treatment that focuses on specific targets within cancer cells. It uses drugs  to block the growth and spread of cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy cells. Targeted therapy is designed to be more precise and tailored to the individual characteristics of the cancer, resulting in potentially fewer side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy.

Hormone therapy is used for certain types of cancer, such as breast or prostate cancer, that rely on hormones to grow. With the help of medications or procedures that interfere with the production of hormones, hormone therapy aims to slow down or stop the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors and prevent their spread to other parts of the body.

Immunotherapy harnesses the power of the immune system to fight cancer cells. It uses drugs or other substances that stimulate the body’s immune response, enabling it to recognize and destroy cancer cells more effectively. Immunotherapy can enhance the immune system’s ability to target cancer and has shown promising results in treating various types of cancer.

Our Medical Oncology Department has the following facilities for Cancer Treatment:

Palliative care represents a comprehensive and sustainable model of evidence-based, patient-centric, individualized care that enhances the well-being of the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of patients suffering from terminal stage cancers and their caregivers.

The most common cancers are Tobacco related cancers (~3,00,000 cases each year), cancer of the Cervix and uterus (~ 1,00,000 cases each year) and Breast cancer (~ 80,000 cases each year).

The cancer toll in developing countries, especially India, is because over 70% of cases are detected late and reported for treatment in very advanced stages. Apart from the pain and misery cancer inflicts on the patient and his/her family, the economic impact of this disease is catastrophic. Simple changes in lifestyles and regular screening can bring down these deaths drastically and even have health benefits that reach beyond cancer. With the principal objective of prevention and early detection of common cancers, Globe Healthcare is working intending to raise awareness and concern about cancer and affirm the prevention and curability of cancers if detected early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the questions you might have about Medical Oncology in Lucknow

Medical oncology and Surgical oncology are two different branches of cancer treatment. Medical oncology focuses on treating cancer using medications, such as chemotherapy and targeted therapies, which are designed to kill cancer cells or slow their growth. Medical oncologists oversee the overall treatment plan and coordinate different therapies.

On the other hand, surgical oncology involves the surgical removal of cancerous tumors and surrounding tissues. Surgical oncologists are specialized surgeons who perform these operations to remove cancer and determine the extent of its spread. Sometimes, surgery is used alongside other treatments like radiation or chemotherapy to provide comprehensive cancer care.

The side effects of cancer care treatment can be managed in various ways to improve the patient’s comfort and well-being. Simple measures include rest, proper nutrition, and staying hydrated. Medications, such as pain relievers, anti-nausea drugs, or steroids, may be prescribed to alleviate specific side effects. Some patients find relief through complementary therapies like acupuncture or massage. Doctors can adjust treatment doses or schedules to reduce side effects. Supportive care, including emotional and psychological support, is also crucial. Open communication with the medical team about side effects helps them provide appropriate solutions. Overall, a personalized approach to managing side effects ensures the best possible quality of life for the patient during cancer care.

The role of a medical oncologist is to specialize in treating cancer patients using medications and therapies. They are doctors who focus on understanding cancer, its various types, and how it affects the body. Medical oncologists work closely with patients to diagnose cancer, create personalized treatment plans, and oversee their care throughout the treatment journey. They use treatments like chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and hormonal therapy to fight cancer cells and improve patients’ outcomes. The medical oncologist also monitors the patient’s progress, manages side effects, and adjusts the treatment as needed. Their ultimate goal is to provide the best possible care and support to help patients in their fight against cancer.

Facing cancer after diagnosis can be challenging, but there are steps to cope with it:

  1. Gather Information: Learn about the type and stage of cancer to understand your condition better.

  2. Seek Support: Lean on family, friends, or support groups to share your feelings and get emotional support.

  3. Talk to Doctors: Discuss treatment options and ask questions to make informed decisions about your care.

  4. Stay Positive: Focus on the present and maintain a positive outlook during cancer treatment.

  5. Take Care of Yourself: Eat well, exercise, and rest to boost your overall well-being.

  6. Manage Stress: Engage in relaxation techniques or hobbies to reduce stress and anxiety.

  7. Accept Help: Don’t hesitate to accept help from others during this challenging time.

These different cancer treatment specialties in Lucknow offer a range of options to help people fight cancer in the best possible way for their specific condition.

An oncology clinical trial is a research study that investigates new ways to prevent, diagnose, or treat cancer. It involves testing new medications, therapies, or procedures on patients with cancer to determine their effectiveness and safety. Clinical trials are conducted by medical researchers and oncologists to gather valuable data and evidence to improve cancer care and outcomes. Patients who participate in these trials may receive the latest treatments and closely monitored medical care. These trials play a crucial role in advancing cancer treatments and helping doctors find better ways to fight cancer, potentially leading to new breakthroughs that benefit cancer patients worldwide. Participation in clinical trials is voluntary, and patients can choose whether or not to take part.
